Following the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, Brad Pitt and his Make It Right Foundation selected Trahan Architects as one of the first 21 architects to design a new generation of single family houses in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward. A central tenet of the Make It Right project is that safe, sustainable, healthy homes can be affordable for all families.
The building typology — the “shotgun” — is the result of site constraints, environmental conditions and efficient planning. Trahan’s design represents these characteristics with a contemporary vision. The roof becomes the main architectural expression, referencing the pitched roofs that are common to the area. As the roof evolved from pragmatic form and function, it transitioned into a high performance component that promotes energy and water efficiency.
As demonstrated by Trahan’s innovative design, those hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina are now proving they can and will rebuild better, stronger and more resilient than before.
