Bringing together a diverse pool of talent around a single shared table, our company is built on open, ongoing conversation. Founded in 1992 by Trey Trahan, the firm is intimate in size but broad in its scope. We engage in a collective questioning of how our process and work can contribute to the health of our ecologies, cities and economies. Each member of the Trahan team is an integral part of a collaborative process that enriches our company culture and improves the quality of our work.
Ryan believes that aesthetics and form in architecture should not be separated from their immediate environment or architectural context, but that does not necessarily mean that visual expression needs to be literal of itself or explicitly referential. Rather, material, form, and narrative should all be equal parts interwoven in order to arrive at an architectural solution that is explicit in its form, implicit in its function and also plays thoughtfully with its surrounding environment.
Ryan’s thesis at PennDesign and current interests are in the possibilities of what Post-Digital aesthetics and materialization mean for architectural design, given that we are in a period where the “digital” has permeated almost every aspect of popular culture. During his time at PennDesign, he worked as a graduate assistant to second year design studios and as a graduate assistant to the second year visual studies sequence. He was also a research assistant for the duration of his education where he co-edited a publication, and did a series of drawings and renderings for a second publication. He was also the recipient of the 2018 Faculty Prize upon graduation. Ryan continues to be involved in PennDesign, as he is now a Part-Time Lecturer, and co-teaches studios in the third year of the 3 year M.Arch I program, most recently with the Chair, Winka Dubbeldam.
