Tulane Riverfront Campus
The Tulane Riverfront Campus is dedicated to primary and applied research focused on coastal and deltaic restoration, retention and protection, along with the study of related ecosystems, geomorphology and hydrology. Storm and natural event histories and their cultural impacts are studied at the campus along with the related economic and energy implications and opportunities.
To accomplish this research, a wide range of disciplines and expertise are needed on site to produce the highest quality of findings and results. The new institute provides an optimized setting for research, collaboration, and education by offering a balance of enclosed and open space in relationship to the site’s natural surroundings and the Mississippi River.

The site straddles a riparian slope of the river and therefor limited in buildable depth to approximately 150 feet running east from the rail line to the no-build zone located above the slope. The site itself is divided into two physical conditions along a north-south axis. West of the seawall, the site is primarily aligned with the adjacent grade and filled with earth. East of the wall in the riparian zone, the site is made up of structured deck supported by piles in the riverbed.
